"There was a study recently in which thirty of the largest companies in the United States are now spending more on lobbying than they pay in Federal taxes."

"Apple’s executives had estimated that about 8,700 industrial engineers were needed to oversee and guide the 200,000 assembly-line workers eventually involved in manufracturing iPhones. The company’s analysts had forecast it would take as long as nine months to find that many qualified engineers in the United States. In China, it took 15 days."

"Worse, because they’re insisting on emphasizing their own social network, they’re destroying relevancy, and user trust in the process. If you search for Hugh Jackman, you may be looking for a lot of things, but you’re almost certainly not looking for his Google profile page. And yet, that’s exactly what’s shoved in your face."

Americans need to pay more taxes, not corporations…

tellingjokesman:

1952 corporate tax as a % of GDP = 32.1%
2010 corporate tax as a % of GDP = 1.3%

1952 Payroll taxes (Social security) as a % of total federal revenue = 9.7%

Review: Bangtown Hair Saloon

Bangtown is not only the coolest place I’ve ever gotten a haircut, but it’s one of my favorite places to hang out in Vancouver.

Seriously.

My hair grows ridiculously fast. I can’t explain it. I feel like the kid from The Peanut Butter Solution. (For the record, that was the most horrifying movie. I was traumatized by it for YEARS after seeing it. Don’t see it. Actually, do see it.)

Anyways, I stumbled upon Bangtown a few months ago after buying some furniture just a few doors down. I walked in and was instantly taken aback by the decor. The old family photos from the 70s, the comfortable couch, the photo of his holiness Pope John Paul II, and a 3-D Jesus hologram.

The day I arrived, I hadn’t booked an appointment, but Lisa happened to be available. Instantly I was smitten…by her epic scissoring and clipping skills. A good listener, she took a few minutes to understand exactly what I wanted. Then she got me a beer (A BEER!) and worked her magic on my mop.

It was the perfect haircut. I mean, she cut it exactly as I wanted it. She’s also a fantastic conversationalist. She helps me to understand my commitment issues while I weep in agreement with her professional evaluation. Just kidding. We usually talk about dating and the total douchebags in this city and what an awesome guy I am. Then I run home crying as I recall what a douchebag I really am.

In short, Bangtown keeps me looking forward to my next haircut, a free beer, a psychological evaluation, tears and laughter, and that little Boston terrier who roams around the store.

PS - Make sure to book appointments ahead of time.

“The Truth About the Economy in 2 Minutes and 15 Seconds”

Good stuff. He misses the part about how American industry has collapsed. Otherwise, it’s a good layman’s terms explanation with real numbers.

‘A Frightening Time in America’: An Interview With David Foster Wallace
Ostap Karmodi: Do you feel we’re living in an age of consumerism or is that just a media concept that doesn’t have any real meaning?
David Foster Wallace: This question, as you know, is very complicated. I can give answers that are somewhat simple and I can really talk only about America, because it’s really the only society that I know. America, as everybody knows, is a country of many contradictions, and a big contradiction for a long time has been between a very aggressive form of capitalism and consumerism against what might be called a kind of moral or civic impulse.

A great example of how not to use Twitter, particularly if it’s your business’ Twitter. Huge fail. Thanks @Hez.
