It’s been a great summer for movies.
In the past seven days, I’ve watched six films:
- Barry Lyndon (at home)
- St. Elmo’s Fire (at home)
- The Muppet Movie (Fresh Air Cinema at Robson Square)
- A Clockwork Orange (at home)
- Casablanca (Fresh Air Cinema at Olympic Village)
- and tonight or tomorrow at the Pacific Cinematheque: Laura
I need to make more friends. But hey, not a bad week for movies.
For those of you in Vancouver who haven’t taken advantage of the Fresh Air Cinema series, do it. It’s awesome, it’s free, it’s outside, and your support of it ensures that it will continue every summer. The crowd turnout has been fantastic: people of all ages, bringing picnic spreads, concealing beverages and being civilized about it, and watching great classic films is more of what this city needs.
More importantly, continue your new found passion for film by hitting up the movies at the Pacific Cinematheque. The importance of supporting film as a cultural medium extends beyond entertainment. We need film to provide us with the means to express our artistic appreciation, to provide us with an additional platform to push for change, and to provide the community with a richer culture which extends beyond that of sports and outdoors. Not everything is about hockey and snowboarding, believe it or not. :)
